Spokane, Washington – A homicide suspect was shot and killed after an overnight police confrontation on West Carlisle Avenue.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the Spokane Independent Investigative Response (SIIR) Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred late Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Police said Spokane officers responded around 11 p.m. to the 1800 block of West Carlisle Avenue as part of an ongoing homicide investigation tied to a North Spokane motel incident reported Sunday, Feb. 22. Detectives had identified an adult male suspect who was later located at the Carlisle address, allegedly armed with a firearm.
Authorities established a perimeter, and specialty units including the Spokane Police Department SWAT Team and Hostage (Crisis) Negotiation Team responded. Officials said officers made multiple attempts to contact the suspect using a valid search warrant, but he allegedly refused to surrender.
During the standoff, officers reported seeing the suspect carrying what appeared to be a long gun while moving in and out of a garage. Around 1:43 a.m., the suspect allegedly ran from the property with the firearm in his hands, jumped two neighboring fences, and was confronted by officers on the perimeter.
Officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect, according to investigators. Police provided life-saving aid until medical personnel arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators recovered a loaded 12-gauge shotgun with a round in the chamber near the suspect’s location and seized additional ammunition from his clothing.
No officers or uninvolved civilians were injured.
Under Washington’s critical incident protocol, the SIIR Team is leading the investigation. The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the involved officers at a later time. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the decedent once appropriate.
The case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office upon completion of the investigation.
