SPARTANBURG, SC – Morning sunlight spreads across a cloudless sky as mild December air lingers across the Upstate. It’s quiet now — crisp, bright, and still — but meteorologists say a dramatic change is coming by Sunday night when temperatures plunge into the mid-teens.

According to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg Office, a stretch of sunny, calm weather will dominate through Saturday. Afternoon highs reach the mid-50s, ideal for outdoor errands, early holiday prep, or travel along I-85 under clear skies.

By Sunday, however, a strong push of Arctic air begins filtering southward. Highs will stall near 45°F, but by nightfall, the thermometer could fall nearly 30 degrees, bottoming out near 16°F — the coldest so far this season. Residents are urged to protect pets, plants, and pipes and check on neighbors without reliable heating.

Monday morning may bring frosty windshields and frozen ground, with the freeze extending into early Tuesday. Sunshine will return, but it will take several days for temperatures to recover.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):

  • Friday: Sunny, high 55°F, low 33°F.
