LANCASTER, Wis. – Southwestern Wisconsin could see dangerous flooding this weekend as slow-moving thunderstorms bring the potential for up to 8 inches of rain from Saturday into Sunday. The National Weather Service says counties along the Mississippi River and Driftless Area are most at risk, with both rural valleys and small towns facing possible high water.

According to the NWS Weather Prediction Center, storms will build Saturday afternoon and continue in waves through Sunday morning, producing rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Most of the region can expect 4 to 6 inches of rain, but localized spots from Prairie du Chien and Boscobel to Platteville could reach 8 inches before the system moves out.

Steep terrain in Grant, Crawford, and Richland counties will increase the flash flood threat, as water can rush quickly through creeks and rivers like the Wisconsin, Kickapoo, and Grant. Low-lying farmland, back roads, and riverfront parks could flood rapidly, while washed-out gravel roads may become impassable.

Travel could be hazardous along U.S. Route 18, Wisconsin Highway 35, and county roads near the river. Officials urge residents to avoid flooded crossings, keep mobile devices charged, and be prepared to evacuate if water rises quickly.

The heaviest rain is expected Saturday night through early Sunday, with gradual improvement later in the day. Still, forecasters warn that swollen rivers may remain high into next week, especially if additional rain follows.
