Phoenix, Ariz. – Monsoon season is set to intensify across the Southwest this weekend, with storms likely to bring above-average rainfall and localized flooding through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the region has a 33 to 40 percent chance of wetter-than-normal conditions from Friday into early next week, with Arizona and New Mexico at the center of the most active storm track. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected to flare up daily, with the heaviest downpours capable of producing flash flooding in low-lying areas and along dry washes.
Drivers on Interstates 10 and 40 should plan for reduced visibility and ponding on roads during peak storm hours. The New Mexico Department of Transportation is urging caution in flood-prone corridors, including stretches near Albuquerque and Las Cruces. In Arizona, Phoenix, Tucson, and Flagstaff could see repeated rounds of heavy rain, raising the risk of power outages and localized street flooding.
Residents are encouraged to avoid travel during severe storms, charge electronic devices, and have an emergency kit ready in case of power disruptions. Meteorologists say monsoon activity could remain elevated into midweek, with additional advisories possible if storm coverage expands.
