Three Rivers, MI – Lake effect snow showers are expected to intensify Wednesday afternoon and evening, creating slick road conditions and poor visibility across parts of Southwestern Michigan just as Thanksgiving travelers hit the road.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties. Snow accumulations between 2 to 6 inches are possible, with the heaviest totals expected near Three Rivers and areas closer to the Indiana border. Winds could also gust over 25 mph, leading to blowing snow and drifting on untreated roads.
Roads such as US-12, I-94, and M-60 could become hazardous, especially during the evening commute. Temperatures will remain near or below freezing overnight, increasing the chance of icy patches by early Thursday. Travel delays may extend into Thanksgiving morning, particularly in rural areas where plows may take longer to clear snow-covered routes.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel Wednesday night and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles. Conditions should gradually improve by Thursday afternoon, but more alerts could be issued if snowfall persists longer than expected.
