Midland, Texas – A significant winter storm is on track to hit southwest and western Texas starting midday Friday, threatening widespread ice, sleet, and travel shutdowns from the Permian Basin to the Davis Mountains.

The National Weather Service in Midland has issued a Winter Storm Warning from noon Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday, covering cities including Odessa, Midland, Andrews, Fort Stockton, Pecos, and Alpine. Ice accumulation could exceed ¼ inch in areas east of the Pecos River, with 1–3 inches of snow and sleet possible along and north of I-20.

Roads like I-20, I-10, US-67, US-385, and TX-349 are expected to become slick and dangerous by Friday evening, especially on overpasses and elevated bridges. Power outages may occur as ice weighs down tree limbs and power lines.

Travelers are advised to delay all non-essential trips, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and prepare for blackouts that could stretch into the weekend. Drivers on remote highways should exercise extreme caution.

Conditions will begin improving Sunday, but additional advisories could follow if snow bands shift southward.
