Blacksburg, Va. – Heavy rain and slow-moving thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding across much of southwest Virginia this afternoon and evening, especially in low-lying areas and near small creeks and streams.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a stalled frontal boundary will remain across the region through tonight, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest rainfall is expected from mid-afternoon through midnight, with the greatest risk stretching from Roanoke and Blacksburg to Martinsville and Galax.

A Level 2 (Slight) Excessive Rainfall Outlook is in effect for most of the region, where 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely, with isolated totals over 3 inches possible in localized storms. The Weather Prediction Center warns that flash flooding may result, especially in areas with poor drainage or urban surfaces.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and be alert for rapidly rising streams. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to charge devices and secure valuables in case of power outages or emergency evacuations.

Rain chances will diminish overnight but remain elevated through Tuesday. Additional advisories may be issued depending on storm development.
