Blacksburg, VA – Rain is returning to much of Virginia this week, with the most substantial rainfall expected between Wednesday and next Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.
Forecasters said only minimal rainfall is expected through Wednesday morning, but heavier showers and storms are likely midweek, especially west of the Blue Ridge crest. Estimated totals in that area could reach up to an inch or more in some locations by the end of the week.
According to the NWS, rainfall through Tuesday night will remain light, with most locations seeing less than a quarter-inch. By late Wednesday into Friday morning, however, totals are projected to rise, with the heaviest rain centered across southwestern Virginia counties.
Despite the incoming showers, meteorologists caution this will not be a “drought buster.” While the rain will bring some short-term relief to dry soils and improve local water levels, longer-term precipitation deficits remain.
The agency advises residents to monitor updates throughout the week, particularly those living west of the Blue Ridge, where storms could bring localized heavier downpours.
