Blacksburg, VA – Another round of afternoon thunderstorms could bring flash flooding to parts of southwest and central Virginia through Sunday, as saturated ground combines with slow-moving storms.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers and thunderstorms are expected to redevelop each afternoon through the weekend, driven by daytime heating and a stalled frontal boundary. Rain chances are highest between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with localized rainfall totals potentially exceeding 1 inch.

Much of the region, including Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and Wytheville, faces a 60% to 80% chance of storms today. While severe weather is not expected, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and very heavy rainfall could make travel hazardous, especially on low-lying roads prone to flooding.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roads and to monitor local alerts. Multiple days of rainfall have left the soil saturated, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding even from brief downpours.

This wet pattern is expected to continue into Sunday as an upper-level trough deepens. Additional weather statements may be issued if conditions worsen.
