Blacksburg, VA – Afternoon and evening thunderstorms Thursday could drop enough heavy rain to trigger flash flooding in parts of Montgomery County and surrounding communities, with the threat persisting into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Marginal Risk is in place for Thursday as slow-moving storms could deliver rainfall between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, with locally higher totals. Areas along low-lying roads and near small creeks—especially in central and southwest Virginia—should prepare for sudden water rises.

Thursday’s storms may disrupt travel on U.S. 460, I-81, and rural connectors during the evening commute. Outdoor events, practices, and late-day activities may be impacted by lightning and brief torrential rain. Residents should have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and avoid driving through water-covered roads.

The unsettled pattern continues through Tuesday, with daily chances of afternoon thunderstorms. While not every location will see rain each day, any storm could produce locally heavy rainfall and brief flooding.
