Blacksburg, Va. – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are set to move through Blacksburg and surrounding communities Wednesday afternoon, bringing the potential for heavy rain and lightning during the evening commute. Drivers across Montgomery County could see reduced visibility and slick conditions into the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, storm chances increase after 3 p.m. Wednesday with the strongest activity possible near midnight. Rainfall totals are expected to remain under an inch, but localized downpours could be heavier in spots. Thursday will bring another round of scattered showers and storms, with rain chances lingering through the evening.

Travelers on U.S. Route 460 and I-81 should watch for sudden downpours and ponding on roads. Residents are urged to delay outdoor plans during the late afternoon and early evening, when thunderstorm activity is most likely.

Conditions begin to improve Friday with decreasing storm chances and partly cloudy skies. By Saturday, southwest Virginia will see more sun, offering a drier stretch of weather heading into the weekend.

Showers may briefly return Sunday night, but early next week looks mostly clear and mild. Warnings remain possible if storms intensify midweek.
