Lynchburg, Virginia – Damaging thunderstorms and the threat of flash flooding are expected across much of central and southwest Virginia this afternoon and evening, with the highest risk east of the Blue Ridge, including Lynchburg and Danville.
According to the National Weather Service Blacksburg, strong to severe storms are likely to impact cities like Lynchburg, Danville, and Roanoke until late Saturday night. Main threats include localized flash flooding of urban areas and small streams, as well as damaging wind gusts that could knock down trees and powerlines. Frequent lightning is also a concern.
Motorists along US-29, US-460, and I-81 should prepare for rapid changes in visibility and ponding water on roads, especially in low-lying spots. Residents in Lewisburg, Bluefield, and Wytheville could see isolated severe storms, while the heaviest rainfall is expected closer to the Virginia-North Carolina border.
Officials urge everyone to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to avoid driving through flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains crucial advice. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and prepare for possible brief power outages.
Storms and heavy rain could persist through tonight, with additional alerts possible if conditions worsen.
