Roads are slick and slushy in many mountain towns, and forecasters warn that snow will continue through the day, creating hazardous travel across several counties from the New River Valley to the North Carolina border.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday. Snow began overnight and is expected to total between 1 and 4 inches, with higher amounts possible in elevated areas such as Floyd, Tazewell, and Grayson counties. Light rain may briefly mix in this afternoon before colder air returns.
Drivers should expect slippery roads, low visibility, and icy bridges, especially along I-81, Route 460, and U.S. 11. Officials urge residents to slow down, leave extra space, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve late tonight.
After the storm clears, Tuesday turns partly sunny and cold, with highs near 36°F and lows dropping into the mid-teens. The chill deepens again Friday as an Arctic airmass moves into the region, sending temperatures plunging and keeping highs below freezing across much of western Virginia.
Forecasters warn that this early December cold snap could be the strongest of the season so far. Residents are encouraged to protect pipes, check on neighbors, and prepare vehicles for freezing conditions.
