Blacksburg, Virginia – Southwest Virginia residents should prepare for wet roads and reduced visibility late Sunday as rain chances increase sharply by nightfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, conditions will stay dry Saturday with rising cloud cover, but showers are expected to develop after 4 p.m. Sunday across the region. Rain probability jumps to 61% in Bristol, 48% in Bluefield, and 43% in Grundy by Sunday evening.

Cities including Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg will see lower rain chances—around 18% to 20%—but evening plans may still be impacted by scattered showers. U.S. Route 460 and Interstate 81 could experience slick patches and slower traffic conditions after sunset.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the evening if rain begins, especially in hilly or rural areas. Now is a good time to check windshield wipers and ensure headlights are working properly.

This system marks the start of a wetter pattern for early next week. Additional updates and any advisories will be issued Sunday morning if rain intensity or coverage increases.
