Blacksburg, Va. – Triple-digit heat index values are gripping southwest Virginia, with the most intense conditions expected Tuesday before a pattern shift brings increasing chances of storms through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, heat index values could reach up to 105°F in the Piedmont region Monday and Tuesday. Lowland areas across the region — including Roanoke, Martinsville, and Danville — may see air temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100°F, while mountainous zones will hover in the upper 80s to mid-90s. A 20–50% chance of thunderstorms will gradually build from Tuesday into Friday, with Friday carrying the highest rain potential.

Areas like Lynchburg and Radford should prepare for a hot, sticky midweek, with temperatures near 95°F and limited overnight relief. Heat safety remains a concern, especially in lowland communities where stagnant air and humidity will combine to produce dangerous conditions. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable populations.

Though no widespread severe weather is forecast, pop-up thunderstorms could bring localized gusts, brief heavy rain, and lightning. Storm chances will ramp up by Wednesday night and continue through the week.

Heat advisories may be issued, and updated alerts are likely as conditions evolve.
