BLACKSBURG, Va. – A quick burst of fall chill will greet the New River Valley before warmer, sunnier days take hold for the weekend. Patchy frost may form early Friday as clear skies and calm winds send temperatures into the 30s across higher elevations and rural valleys.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Thursday night’s low near 36°F could bring frost to low-lying areas, especially west of I-81 through Pulaski, Montgomery, and Giles Counties. Residents should protect tender plants and cover garden crops Thursday evening. Drivers should also plan for early fog and light frost on rural roadways Friday morning.

Once the frost fades, bright sunshine will return Friday with highs near 68°F. Saturday will bring ideal fall conditions — sunny skies, light winds, and afternoon highs around 75°F — perfect for outdoor events, football tailgates, and scenic drives through the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visibility will remain excellent for leaf-viewing trips through the mountains.

Sunday may bring a few scattered showers as a weak system moves through, but dry and mild weather quickly returns early next week. The region will see highs in the 70s and crisp, comfortable nights through Tuesday, marking a classic mid-October pattern.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for chilly starts Friday, but enjoy what looks to be one of the most pleasant weekends of the fall season across southwest Virginia.
