Morristown, TN – The National Weather Service in Morristown has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, effective until 7 p.m. Monday, warning of light snow and hazardous road conditions across the Smoky Mountains region.
According to the NWS, total snow accumulations of up to 1 inch are expected in lower elevations, with 2 to 3 inches possible in the higher terrain of Blount, Sevier, Cocke, and Greene Counties. In Southwest Virginia, including Wise, Russell, and Washington Counties, light snow will continue through Monday with similar totals in elevated areas.
Snow is expected to cause slippery roads and limited visibility, particularly along Interstate 81, U.S. 321, and mountain passes near Gatlinburg and Bristol. Forecasters warn that both the morning and evening commutes could be affected.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check Tennessee 511 or Virginia 511 for real-time road conditions.
Temperatures will remain below freezing through Monday night, increasing the risk of black ice on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.
