Blacksburg, VA – Rainfall totals could rise sharply across Southwest Virginia and Northwest North Carolina through Thursday, with the potential for flooding in areas with poor drainage. Communities from the Grayson Highlands south to Mount Airy may see between 1 and 2 inches of rain by Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rainfall probabilities are climbing, especially in the region’s southern tier. There’s a better than 50/50 chance that Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties will see at least 2 inches of rainfall. Southeast West Virginia may receive at least a half inch, enough to prompt isolated flooding concerns.

Mount Airy and surrounding towns fall within the “Area of Greatest Concern” for heavy rain, with ponding on roads and minor stream flooding possible. Residents in low-lying zones or near poor drainage systems should remain alert for standing water and avoid travel during downpours.

Showers are expected to taper off by late Thursday, though forecasters warn additional advisories could follow if rainfall rates intensify.
