Phoenix, Arizona – Arizona is set to bake under a potentially record-setting heat wave next week, with temperatures in Phoenix possibly reaching 120°F by Thursday, August 8. A high-level Extreme Heat Warning is in place from Friday through Saturday, and broader impacts across the Southwest are expected through August 14.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a powerful upper-level ridge will lock intense heat over southern Arizona, the Southern High Plains, and central U.S. states. Southern Arizona faces a high risk (over 60%) of extreme temperatures, while surrounding states like New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma could see highs over 110°F during the August 6–10 window.

Major cities across the Lower Mississippi Valley and Desert Southwest are included in the moderate-to-slight risk zones, with heat indexes soaring into dangerous ranges. Officials warn of increased risk for heat stroke, wildfire ignition, and drought intensification. Outdoor activity should be limited during peak afternoon hours, and residents are urged to hydrate, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid non-essential travel.

Heat warnings may be updated as high pressure strengthens midweek. More advisories are expected by Monday as new data comes in.
