PHOENIX, Ariz. – Heavy rain from Hurricane Lorena is expected to drench Arizona beginning late Wednesday and continue through Friday, raising the threat of flash flooding across much of the state. The system, which is already soaking Baja California Sur, is forecast to push into southeastern Baja California and northwestern Mexico before spreading deep tropical moisture into the Southwest.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Lorena’s rains will fuel widespread flood risks in Arizona’s deserts and mountains, with the highest concern in areas of steep terrain. Officials warn of isolated to scattered flash floods, particularly near washes and road crossings. Tucson, Phoenix, and Yuma could see localized flooding that snarls traffic and forces road closures.

Though Lorena could briefly intensify offshore, forecasters expect the storm to weaken as it brushes the Baja California peninsula on Thursday. Still, tropical downpours will reach Arizona, and saturated soils may trigger mudslides in vulnerable areas. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid low-lying roads, prepare for sudden detours, and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

The storm’s remnants will continue to impact Arizona into Friday, with additional advisories possible as rainfall totals increase.
