Fresno, California – Parts of the Southwest could see the season’s first triple-digit temperatures next week, with a moderate risk of excessive heat gripping much of California, Nevada, and Arizona from May 22 through May 25.
According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, a significant heat wave is expected to develop across the region, bringing temperatures 10–15 degrees above normal. The highest risk zone spans central and southern California, including Fresno, Bakersfield, and Barstow, where residents could experience highs exceeding 100°F. Dry air and persistent high pressure may also elevate wildfire danger, especially in foothill and desert regions.
In Arizona, Phoenix and Yuma may also approach triple digits, while parts of southern Nevada, including Las Vegas, remain under a slight to moderate heat risk. Vulnerable populations — particularly the elderly and outdoor workers — are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors.
This potential heat event could mark the earliest major heat wave of 2025 for the Southwest. Officials recommend preparing now by testing cooling systems, reviewing fire safety plans, and monitoring local alerts.
Additional heat advisories may be issued in the coming days as conditions evolve.
