Southwest United States — Wednesday — Hazardous early-season heat is expected to spread across the Southwest Thursday and Friday, potentially breaking temperature records.

According to the NOAA National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, temperatures across the region are forecast to run 20 to 30 degrees above average for mid-March.

Forecasters say the surge of heat could push daily highs into the 80s and 90s across parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and neighboring states, with some areas approaching or exceeding long-standing March temperature records.

The Weather Prediction Center reports a moderate to major heat risk for several areas, including Los Angeles and San Diego, where unusually high temperatures are expected for this time of year.

Officials warn that the heat could be hazardous for vulnerable populations, particularly people without effective cooling or access to adequate hydration.

Meteorologists also noted that numerous daily temperature records may be tied or broken, and in some locations all-time March heat records could fall if forecasts hold.

The heat event is expected to persist into the weekend, with forecasters warning that warm conditions could intensify again next week in some areas.

Early-season heat waves can be especially dangerous because many people have not yet adjusted to warmer temperatures and cooling resources may not be fully in use.

For outdoor workers, travelers, and residents across the Southwest, officials recommend staying hydrated, limiting prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and checking on vulnerable individuals.
