Ligonier, Pennsylvania – Snow-covered roads and gusty winds are expected to make travel difficult across the Laurel Highlands and nearby Appalachian ridges beginning Sunday morning and continuing into Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Sunday morning through early Monday for the higher elevations of Fayette and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania, as well as eastern Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected across the Laurel Highlands, with higher totals of 3 to 5 inches, and isolated 6-inch amounts, possible in eastern Tucker County. Winds will gust between 40 and 55 mph, strongest along exposed ridges.
In Pennsylvania, the advisory includes Ligonier, Donegal, Champion, and Ohiopyle, where untreated roads may quickly become slick during the late morning and afternoon. In West Virginia, Davis, Thomas, Canaan Valley, Terra Alta, Rowlesburg, and Hazelton could see blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility as winds increase through the day.
Strong winds may bring down tree limbs and power lines in the highest elevations, especially in eastern Tucker County. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavier snow and blowing conditions.
Snow showers should taper late Sunday night, but icy patches may linger into early Monday. Officials encourage residents to monitor road conditions and report snow totals as conditions evolve through the day.
