Columbus, Ohio – A sharp overnight temperature drop is expected to push much of Ohio, northern Kentucky, and eastern Indiana below freezing late Tuesday night, putting early spring vegetation at risk and creating patchy frost by daybreak Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from 11 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday for much of central and southern Ohio, including Columbus, Dayton, Springfield, and Chillicothe. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s, cold enough to damage newly planted crops, gardens, and flowering trees.

Communities across the Miami Valley and central Ohio could wake up to frost on vehicles and grassy surfaces. Cities including Dayton, Xenia, Troy, Bellefontaine, and Newark are expected to see the coldest readings around sunrise Wednesday. Farther south, Portsmouth, Hillsboro, and Georgetown may also drop below freezing for several hours.

Agricultural officials warn the cold snap could harm early-season vegetables, fruit blossoms, and ornamental plants that emerged during the recent stretch of mild spring weather. Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, bring potted plants indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing or irrigation lines where possible.

Drivers likely won’t face widespread travel issues, but cold surfaces early Wednesday could allow localized frost on bridges and rural roads, particularly before sunrise.

Temperatures should rebound into the 50s Wednesday afternoon, though additional chilly nights remain possible later this week as spring weather continues to fluctuate across the Ohio Valley. More advisories could be issued if additional cold waves develop.
