Joplin, MO – A Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday across southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas, as strong northwest winds sweep through the region overnight and into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected across Barton, Jasper, Newton, McDonald, and Vernon Counties in Missouri, and Crawford, Cherokee, and Bourbon Counties in Kansas.

The NWS warns that gusty conditions may knock down small tree limbs, scatter unsecured outdoor objects, and cause isolated power outages, especially in open areas. High-profile vehicles could encounter difficulty on highways, including I-44 and U.S. 71, during the strongest wind period.

Winds will begin increasing Tuesday evening and peak between midnight and late Wednesday morning before slowly easing through the afternoon. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items such as trash cans, patio furniture, and Halloween decorations ahead of the advisory.
