Springfield, Mo. – Tornadoes, large hail, and flash flooding are expected to impact southwest Missouri this afternoon and evening, as a powerful storm system closes out a weekend of severe weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, Sunday’s storms may be the strongest yet, bringing wind gusts over 80 mph, golf ball to baseball-sized hail, and isolated tornadoes. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. across much of the region, especially along the I-49 corridor from Joplin to Nevada.
Severe storms are most likely between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with areas including Springfield, Branson, and West Plains under a Level 3 (Enhanced) risk. Rainfall totals may climb another 1 to 4 inches on top of the 2–4 inches already seen this weekend, raising the risk of flash flooding near area creeks, rivers, and low-lying roads.
Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel, especially during heavy rain or storm warnings. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and have a shelter plan ready in case of tornado warnings.
Storms will taper overnight, but additional alerts may be issued as the system moves east. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and local media for real-time updates.
