Springfield, MO – Heavy rainfall and flash flooding concerns are increasing across southwest Missouri Saturday, June 13, as multiple rounds of thunderstorms move through the region, prompting a Flood Watch and warnings from forecasters about dangerous travel conditions overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, widespread rainfall is expected across much of southern Missouri through tonight, with many locations receiving between 2 and 4 inches of rain. Some isolated areas could see as much as 6 inches where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same locations.

The Flood Watch covers much of southwest and south-central Missouri, including areas surrounding Springfield, Branson, Lebanon, Nevada, Ava and Osage Beach.

Forecasters warn that the combination of saturated ground and intense rainfall rates could lead to widespread flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, urban locations, small streams and flood-prone roadways. Creeks, rivers and other waterways are also expected to rise through the weekend.

Outside the Flood Watch area, rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches remain likely, but localized heavier amounts are still possible with stronger thunderstorms.

The greatest flooding threat is expected through Saturday night as repeated storms move across the region. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, especially after dark when flooded roads are more difficult to recognize.

Emergency officials continue to emphasize the National Weather Service’s life-saving message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles attempting to cross flooded roadways.

Residents living near creeks, streams and flood-prone areas should closely monitor weather alerts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Additional flood advisories, warnings and flash flood warnings may be issued as rainfall intensifies throughout the evening and overnight hours.
