Springfield, Missouri – Strong winds are expected to impact southwest Missouri today, prompting a Wind Advisory for areas along and west of Highway 63 and creating hazardous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the Wind Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph are expected across much of the advisory area, with the strongest winds occurring during the late morning and afternoon hours.
Forecasters said the gusty conditions could make travel difficult for semi-trucks, vans, and other high-profile vehicles, particularly on north-south roadways. Loose outdoor objects may be blown around, and small tree limbs could break due to the strength of the winds.
The strong winds are occurring ahead of a sharp change in weather expected early in the new week. The National Weather Service said much colder air will move into the region Monday, bringing a return to winter-like conditions across southwest Missouri.
High temperatures on Monday are forecast to remain in the upper 20s to lower 30s, a significant drop compared to recent days. Morning wind chills are expected to fall below zero in some areas, with most locations experiencing single-digit wind chills during the early morning hours.
A gradual warming trend is expected to begin by midweek. Forecasts show highs climbing into the mid-30s to low 40s Tuesday, then reaching the 40s and lower 50s by Wednesday as winds ease and temperatures recover.
Drivers, outdoor workers, and students should plan for difficult travel conditions today due to strong winds and prepare for much colder temperatures to start the workweek. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware as conditions change.
