SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Roads across southwest Missouri could quickly flood this morning as bands of heavy rain push through the region, prompting a Flood Watch that remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday. Some counties could see as much as 7 inches of rainfall before storms move out.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the heaviest downpours are expected southwest of a Nevada-to-Branson line, including McDonald, Newton, and Cherokee counties. Rainfall totals will generally range from 1 to 4 inches, but localized areas are forecast to receive up to 7 inches, creating dangerous flash flooding conditions.

In Joplin, Pittsburg, and Anderson, low-lying roads may become impassable, and emergency officials are urging drivers not to attempt travel across flooded routes. Areas along creeks and rivers, including Shoal Creek and Spring River, could see rapid rises.

Branson and Springfield are forecast to pick up closer to 1 inch of rain, though isolated heavier bursts may still cause urban street flooding. Authorities remind residents to move vehicles to higher ground and avoid unnecessary travel until the threat subsides.

The Flood Watch will expire this afternoon, but officials caution that additional advisories may follow if storms linger or flooding persists.
