Springfield, MO – A blast of cold air will grip southwest Missouri early this week, sending wind chills into the teens both Monday and Tuesday mornings, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield.
Forecasters say the bitter chill will follow a sharp weekend cold front that dropped daytime highs by more than 30 degrees. Actual air temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s overnight, but brisk northwest winds will make it feel closer to 10–15°F in many locations, including Springfield, Joplin, and Rolla.
Residents heading out early for work or school Monday and Tuesday are urged to dress warmly, with layers, hats, and gloves recommended. Pets and livestock should also be protected from the sudden drop in temperatures.
While afternoons will gradually warm into the 40s and 50s, mornings will remain frigid through midweek before a warming trend returns later in the week.
