Benton Harbor, Michigan – Southwest Michigan drivers could face dangerous whiteout conditions and up to 12 inches of snow through Sunday as a potent lake effect system gives way to a broader winter storm over Thanksgiving weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect tonight for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties, with lake effect snow bringing 1–4 inches and sudden visibility drops, especially north of US 30. A Winter Storm Watch follows from 4 a.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday, with 6–12 inches of snow possible—especially closer to Lake Michigan.

I-94, US 31, and M-60 are expected to see the worst impacts, with slick roads and rapid whiteout conditions from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday. Some areas may briefly see a rain/snow mix Sunday morning, particularly south of US 12 and east of I-69.

Road crews urge drivers to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for changing conditions. Wind chills in the teens and low 20s will add to the cold stress for stranded motorists.

More updates are expected as the storm evolves, with additional advisories possible into Sunday.
