Benton Harbor, Michigan – Sudden bursts of 60 mph wind and hail could disrupt travel across southwest Michigan late Tuesday as storms build into the region.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 78 remains in effect until 6 p.m. EDT for Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch, and Hillsdale counties. Conditions are becoming favorable for storms to strengthen as they move east from Indiana into a more unstable air mass.
The most immediate impacts are expected along the I-94 corridor, including Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and into areas toward Coldwater and Hillsdale. Wind gusts could snap tree limbs and cause scattered power outages, while isolated hail may damage vehicles and roofs.
Drivers should be alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially during the late afternoon commute when storms may organize into stronger clusters. Secure outdoor items and be ready to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued.
The threat will continue through early evening as storms track toward southern Lower Michigan, with additional warnings possible as conditions evolve.
