Chicago, Illinois – Waves as high as five feet and dangerous rip currents are expected to make swimming life-threatening along Illinois, Indiana, and southwest Michigan beaches this afternoon through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, a Beach Hazards Statement will remain in effect from 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday for the Lake Michigan shoreline from Chicago and Evanston south to Gary, Chesterton, and New Buffalo. Quickly-building waves and powerful currents will create hazardous conditions for anyone entering the water.

Officials urge beachgoers to stay dry when waves are high and obey all posted signs and closures. Swimming is strongly discouraged, especially along breakwalls and piers where currents can become unpredictable. Lifeguards and emergency crews may limit access to certain areas until the threat subsides.

This alert covers the highest-risk stretch of southern Lake Michigan, including popular destinations such as Oak Street Beach, Montrose Beach, and Indiana Dunes. Recent years have seen similar summer hazards, with several drownings tied to rip currents in this region.

The Beach Hazards Statement remains active until Thursday morning. Further advisories are possible if dangerous conditions persist. Stay updated at weather.gov/greatlakes/beachhazards.
