Grand Rapids, Michigan – Storms could stir up trouble across southwest Michigan Friday afternoon, with wind gusts up to 40 mph and scattered hail possible along the I-94 and I-96 corridors. Areas like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Lansing may face travel delays and slick roadways through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a low-pressure system will trigger scattered thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday. While the strongest storms will be isolated, localized gusts of 40 mph and brief small hail could develop, especially in Ottawa, Kent, and Eaton counties.

While spotter activation won’t be needed, residents should remain alert during peak commute hours. If thunder roars, head indoors — and make sure outdoor plans are flexible. Drivers along I-94 and I-96 should slow down and watch for pooling water.

The weekend outlook shows lingering instability. A 20–30% chance of rain remains in place for both Saturday and Sunday, though most of the weekend should remain partly sunny and seasonable. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-80s by Father’s Day.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, organized thunderstorms return, with stronger storm potential and another round of gusty winds across southern Michigan.
