Benton Harbor, Michigan – Tornadoes, damaging wind, and large hail are possible in southwest Michigan this afternoon as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Wednesday for Berrien, Cass, Branch, and St. Joseph counties.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, clusters of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes have already developed over Illinois and are tracking eastward into lower Michigan. The watch includes inland counties and coastal areas of Lake Michigan from New Buffalo north to St. Joseph and as far offshore as the midline of the lake.
Communities along I-94 and U.S. 12, including Benton Harbor, Niles, and Three Rivers, should stay weather-aware through the evening. Winds could exceed 60 mph, and brief tornadoes may spin up with little warning. Boaters from Michigan City to Wilmette Harbor are advised to seek safe harbor immediately.
Residents are urged to charge phones, secure outdoor items, and review tornado shelter plans. Schools and summer camps in the area have been notified and are monitoring conditions closely.
More warnings may follow if storms intensify or move northeast faster than expected. Watches and advisories remain active through this evening.
