BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Drivers across southwest Michigan could encounter water-covered roads through late Tuesday night as heavy rainfall prompts a Flood Advisory for multiple counties, including Calhoun, Barry and Kalamazoo.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, radar and rain gauges showed 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen by 5:35 p.m., with another 1 to 1.5 inches possible before conditions ease. Low-lying and poor drainage areas are most at risk, along with urban streets where storm drains may be overwhelmed.

Flood-prone locations include Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Galesburg, Parchment, Richland, Gull Lake, Comstock Northwest, Westwood, Assyria, Augusta, Hickory Corners, Banfield, Bedford and Comstock. Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Water over roadways can develop quickly, especially in rural areas where culverts and ditches may already be full. Residents should monitor local alerts and be prepared for detours or travel delays.

The advisory remains in effect until 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, with updates possible if rainfall persists.
