Dodge City, Kansas – Travel across much of western and south-central Kansas could become extremely difficult beginning Friday afternoon as a strengthening winter storm threatens heavy snowfall and prolonged hazardous conditions through late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for a large portion of central, southwest, and west-central Kansas. Snow totals of 4 to 7 inches are possible across areas including Hays, Garden City, Scott City, Wakeeney, and Liberal, while parts of south-central and southwest Kansas could see heavier amounts ranging from 6 to 10 inches.
Communities such as Dodge City, Pratt, Greensburg, Kinsley, Medicine Lodge, Meade, Coldwater, Ashland, and Cimarron are within the higher snowfall zone. Roads, especially rural highways and secondary routes, may become snow-covered and slick, making travel very difficult at times. The Friday evening commute is expected to be one of the most impacted periods as snow intensifies.
Officials urge residents to monitor updated statements, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Motorists who must travel should allow extra time, carry emergency supplies, and stay informed through local alerts. Snowfall may continue into late Saturday night, and watches could be upgraded to warnings as confidence in totals and impacts increases.
