Dodge City, Kansas – Heavy snow is expected to significantly impact travel across southwest Kansas on Friday, Jan. 9, as a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from early morning through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the Winter Storm Warning is active from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST Friday, Jan. 9, for Grant, Morton, Seward, Stanton, and Stevens counties.

Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are forecast across the warned area, including the communities of Ulysses, Johnson City, Elkhart, Liberal, and Hugoton. While snowfall rates may vary, officials warn that even moderate snow accumulation can lead to rapidly deteriorating road conditions.

The National Weather Service cautions that roads are expected to become slick and hazardous, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes, Jan. 9. Travel may become difficult at times, especially on untreated highways, rural roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period. Those who must be on the roads should allow extra travel time and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, in case of delays or road closures.

For the latest road conditions across Kansas, motorists are encouraged to call 511 before traveling.
