Garden City, Kan. – Strong storms are sweeping across southwest Kansas Friday evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for six counties. Residents in Grant, Hamilton, Kearny, Morton, Stanton, and Stevens counties could see damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours through late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, storms are expected to intensify through the evening hours with the potential to produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. Emergency managers warn that isolated power outages and difficult travel conditions could occur if storms strengthen.
Drivers along U.S. Highways 56 and 160 should prepare for sudden low visibility from heavy rain and possible debris on roadways. In Stevens County, emergency officials are urging residents to secure outdoor items and stay indoors as the strongest cells move through.
Those in southwest Kansas should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity, keep mobile devices charged, and be prepared to move to safe shelter if warnings are issued.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active until 11 p.m., with additional advisories possible if storms persist into early Saturday.
