Dodge City, Kansas – Snow-covered roads are becoming more widespread across southwest Kansas, prompting warnings for slower and more cautious travel Friday afternoon.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Dodge City, increasing snowfall has led to deteriorating road conditions across the region. As of about 12:15 p.m., several highways were reported as partially to completely snow covered, with slick spots developing quickly.

The National Weather Service advised drivers to reduce speeds and increase following distances if travel is necessary. Snow-covered roads can significantly extend stopping distances and increase the risk of crashes, especially on untreated rural highways and secondary roads.

Road condition maps released by the agency show widespread impacts across southwest Kansas, including areas near Dodge City and surrounding counties. Visibility may also be reduced at times as snow continues to fall, further complicating travel conditions.

Forecasters emphasized that conditions can change rapidly as snowfall persists, with some roads transitioning from wet to snow covered in a short period of time. Bridges, overpasses, and lightly traveled routes are especially prone to becoming slick.

Drivers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions before traveling and to carry winter safety supplies if heading out. Allowing extra time to reach destinations can help reduce the risk of weather-related incidents.

The National Weather Service did not specify when road conditions are expected to improve but urged residents to remain alert for updates as the afternoon progresses.

For commuters, delivery drivers, and afternoon travelers across southwest Kansas, snow-covered roads may lead to delays and hazardous driving conditions through the rest of the day.
