Dodge City, Kan. – Early morning rain is sweeping across southwest Kansas Tuesday, with wet conditions likely to impact travel in Ulysses, Sublette, and Meade by 9 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the leading edge of light rain showers was spotted near Elkhart and Liberal around 5 a.m. The precipitation is expected to continue moving northeast, with steadier rainfall possible through noon. An isolated thunderstorm near the Oklahoma border cannot be ruled out.
Drivers along U.S. Highways 56 and 83 should plan for reduced visibility and slick roads during the morning commute. Communities from Hugoton to Garden City could see occasional rumbles of thunder, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated. Before the main band of rain, sprinkles and scattered light showers may also occur.
Residents are encouraged to use caution on wet roads and allow extra travel time. No flash flooding is expected, but ponding on rural roads could occur in areas of heavier rainfall.
Rain chances diminish after noon, but more updates may follow if storms develop near the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
