Dodge City, Kansas – Southwest Kansas residents should prepare for dangerous heat this weekend, with afternoon heat index values reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly along the I-70 corridor and the Red Hills area. High temperatures from Friday through Sunday will hover in the mid-90s, making outdoor activities risky.
According to the US National Weather Service Dodge City Kansas, the peak heat index is expected Friday and Saturday afternoons. Temperatures will climb from the upper 70s in the morning to around 97 degrees by late afternoon on both days, before dropping into the low 80s overnight. Sunday will also see a significant afternoon heat index in the upper 90s.
Cities like Garden City, Hays, and Salina, situated along the I-70 corridor, will experience the most intense conditions. Residents working outdoors or participating in strenuous activities should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and be aware of heat-related illnesses. Individuals without air conditioning are advised to check on elderly neighbors and those vulnerable to heat. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can rapidly become fatal.
Warnings for excessive heat remain in effect through Sunday. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
