Omaha, NE – A major winter storm is expected to impact parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa beginning Friday afternoon, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerous travel conditions through Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from noon Friday until midnight Saturday, covering Monona, Harrison, Shelby, and Pottawattamie counties in Iowa, as well as Cedar and Thurston counties in Nebraska.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations could reach 5 to 8 inches, with a light glaze of ice up to one-tenth of an inch expected in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is likely during the Friday evening commute, when roads such as Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 30 could become treacherous.

Travelers are urged to delay non-essential trips and keep emergency supplies—such as food, water, and a flashlight—in their vehicles. The NWS warns that “travel will be very difficult” and advises checking 511 for the latest road conditions in both states.

Residents should prepare for reduced visibility, slippery roads, and possible power interruptions as the storm moves through the region Friday night into Saturday.
