Albany, Georgia – Thunderstorms unleashed torrential rain across southwest Georgia Monday evening, triggering a flash flood warning and snarling travel from Albany to Blakely. Roads, low-lying neighborhoods, and streams are already seeing rising water as heavy rain sweeps across Dougherty, Lee, Early, and Baker counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the flash flood warning is in effect until 9:15 p.m. for a broad swath of the region, including Morgan, Leesburg, Arlington, Edison, and southern Terrell County. Radar detected multiple storms parked over the area, dumping several inches of rain in a short time and causing immediate flooding threats. Motorists on US 82, GA 91, and local routes should avoid all flooded streets and watch for rapidly changing road conditions, especially near underpasses and creeks.
The greatest risk is to drivers who may attempt to cross water-covered roads. Emergency officials urge everyone to turn around and find alternate routes. Residents near small streams, drainage ditches, and urban areas like East Albany and Turner City should move valuables to higher ground and be ready for possible evacuations if water rises quickly.
Flash flooding may continue for several hours, with additional alerts possible through tonight if storms persist.
