Sanibel, Fla. – More than 11 inches of rain soaked Sanibel overnight, flooding streets and straining drainage systems across Lee County’s barrier islands. Roads remain slick Sunday morning even as water slowly recedes, raising travel concerns for residents and visitors.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, Sanibel recorded 11.62 inches between 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Other parts of the islands saw totals from 5 to nearly 10 inches, including Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge with 9.96 inches and Saint James City with 8.91 inches.

Emergency officials are urging drivers to avoid low-lying roadways, especially along Gulf Drive, Harbor Lane, and sections of Captiva Drive, where standing water remains. Lee County EMS reports no major injuries but warns that stalled vehicles and minor roadway washouts have been reported.

Residents are advised to keep storm drains clear, avoid walking through floodwaters, and remain alert for additional advisories if showers redevelop later today. The heaviest rainfall threat has passed, but lingering puddles and runoff will keep some areas hazardous into the afternoon.
