Grand Junction, Colorado – Thunderstorms and snow are expected across western Colorado today, with mountain zones above 9,000 feet likely to see fresh accumulation and slick travel conditions through sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, scattered storms will build Thursday afternoon, tapering off in the evening. Areas across southwest Colorado—including parts of the San Juan Mountains and Grand Valley—could drop back near freezing overnight, raising the risk of icy spots and hazardous travel on mountain passes.

The system is expected to clear by Friday as warmer, drier air moves in. Temperatures in Grand Junction will climb from today’s high near 71°F to the low 80s by Saturday. Winds will increase, especially on the plateau regions and high desert, creating critical fire weather conditions from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and monitor local alerts. Dry lightning remains a threat in elevated terrain through the weekend.

Though the weekend brings brief relief, another storm system is expected early next week, bringing cooler, unsettled weather back to the region. Stay tuned for updated advisories through Monday.
