Durango, Colo. – A Flood Watch remains in effect for southwest Colorado through midnight Tuesday, with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction warning that saturated ground and additional thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across river basins and mountain valleys.
According to the NWS, the alert covers the Animas River Basin, San Juan River Basin, and portions of the San Juan Mountains. Though widespread rainfall has ended, forecasters warn that renewed storm cells this afternoon and evening could bring locally heavy downpours capable of flooding creeks, streams, and low-lying areas.
Rivers and crossings near Durango, Silverton, and Pagosa Springs may see rapid rises, and low-water bridges could become impassable if runoff intensifies. Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and monitor local alerts for potential Flash Flood Warnings.
Emergency officials recommend moving to higher ground if water begins to rise and keeping communication devices charged in case of power outages.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight MDT tonight, with additional watches possible if evening storms persist.
