Grand Junction, Colo. – Dry, warm weather will persist across western Colorado today, with breezy afternoon conditions adding to localized critical fire danger, particularly in the southwest. While winds will be lighter than in recent days, the dry air and warm temperatures will keep fuels primed for ignition.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, fire weather conditions may develop at times Monday, especially in areas with active outdoor burning restrictions. The risk is greatest in lower elevations and valleys but extends into the foothills.
Moisture is expected to increase by mid to late week, bringing a better chance for showers and storms, especially in the high terrain. Early storms may produce gusty winds and lightning, which could spark new fires before wetter conditions move in by late in the week. Residents and travelers in the mountains should remain alert for rapidly changing weather, particularly during afternoon hours.
Avoid open burning today and secure outdoor equipment that could spark. Fire danger may ease later this week, but storms could bring new hazards, including lightning and reduced visibility on mountain roads.
