Wyoming – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for southern Wyoming’s mountain ranges, with significant snowfall and strong winds expected from late Thursday morning through Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the advisory covers the Sierra Madre Range and the Snowy Range, including the Albany and Centennial areas. The advisory is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Thursday and continue until 5 p.m. MST Friday.

Forecasters expect widespread snowfall totaling between 8 and 12 inches, with locally higher accumulations possible above 9,000 feet in elevation. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 40 mph, which may lead to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility across exposed ridgelines and mountain passes.

The National Weather Service warned that travel could become very difficult, particularly during periods of heavier snow and strong winds. Backcountry conditions may deteriorate rapidly, increasing the risk for anyone recreating outdoors.

Officials noted that hunters, hikers, and snowmobilers could become disoriented or lost due to low visibility caused by falling and blowing snow. Cold temperatures combined with wind may also elevate the risk of exposure for those unprepared for prolonged winter conditions.

Motorists traveling through mountain areas are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Road conditions may worsen quickly, especially during periods of heavier snowfall.

Travelers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before heading into the affected areas and to carry winter survival gear if travel cannot be delayed.
