Milwaukee, WI – A brief window of freezing rain could create slick travel conditions across southern Wisconsin overnight into early Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, the greatest risk for light icing is expected between midnight and 6 a.m., particularly north of a line from Portage to Milwaukee.
Forecasters note some uncertainty remains on whether precipitation will fully reach the ground due to a layer of dry air near the surface. However, if freezing rain does occur, surface temperatures just below freezing could allow ice to form on contact.
The risk will be highest on elevated and untreated surfaces, including bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
Areas north and northeast of the I-90 corridor, including parts of east-central Wisconsin, have the best chance of seeing a light glaze by early Thursday morning.
Temperatures are expected to gradually rise later Thursday, reducing icing concerns as conditions improve.
Even light icing can impact early morning commutes, especially for drivers and students traveling before sunrise.
